Alfalfa (also known as Lucerne) Haylage is made from a legume, not a grass, originating from the same family as clover and peas. This makes it higher in protein and digestible fibre in comparison to more traditional grass haylage. Alfalfa haylage can be fed as the sole forage source where nutrient requirements allow or in combination with grass hay or haylage.

Product Description

Alfalfa Haylage for Browsers and Grazers

Browsers and grazers in captivity are often offered alfalfa forage or a combination of alfalfa and grass forage. This includes ruminant browsers such as giraffe, kudu, tapir, reindeer, Burmese Brow Antlered deer (cervids), okapi and gerenuk; nonruminant browsers such as pygmy hippopotamus and black rhinoceros; grazers such as waterbuck, topi, bison, camels, zebra and white rhinoceros and ‘mixed’ feeders such as the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Captive elephants are also commonly fed a combination of grass and legumes (alfalfa/timothy mixes being particularly favoured).
Please note that alfalfa forage tends to be richer in minerals (calcium, zinc, copper and magnesium) which needs to be accounted for when considering any concentrate/supplementary feed (in order to preserve optimum calcium to phosphorus ratios and ultimately a balanced ration).

  • Louise B

“My horses love the Low Energy Haylage and it is going down well. The main reason I changed it was to stop my pony from coughing as she is very sensitive to any dust. She has stopped coughing now. Fabulous service by yourselves from initial contact to delivery and it is much appreciated!”

  • Leah C

“Very happy to have found your Low Energy Haylage, after my horses and I developed a bad cough from really dusty hay from a different supplier. Your haylage is absolutely dust free, much easier to handle and there is zero waste. I wish I had changed a lot earlier as it’s the best forage I’ve ever used in 40 plus years with horses”

  • Kim C

“High quality products, we have bought from M&T for a number of years. Good, friendly advice (we have an ex-race horse and a laminitis prone Cob). Highly recommend”

Bagged Timothy Hay for Horses and Ponies

Our Timothy Hay provides the ideal solution for good doers and native types in rest to moderate work, requiring high levels of fibre but low levels of energy (calories) and sugar. With typical sugar levels below 10%, our Timothy Hay is suitable for laminitics or those with clinical conditions that mean a low sugar diet is required. Being low in sugar also makes this product suitable for horses and ponies that can become hot or fizzy on high energy and sugar forage and those on box rest or convalescing. Our Timothy Hay represents the lowest step on our product ladder in terms of energy (calories) which is typical of Timothy grass species, often being more suitable for the better doer and leisure horse type than Ryegrass-based products.
Our bagged Timothy Hay offers a mess-free, compact option, ideal for travelling and staying away at events.
